witS & Smitty!: A Duo Embracing Musical Diversity, Overcoming Industry Challenges, and Connecting with Fans

witS & Smitty!: A Duo Embracing Musical Diversity, Overcoming Industry Challenges, and Connecting with Fans

witS & Smitty!'s first EP, "Chops & Memos," was a lo-fi hip hop record with a gritty, bedroom-recorded sound. Since then, the duo has released "Corde Raide," which features more cinematic, instrumental music, and "Eat Your Food," which revisits their roots in bars and beats.

By experimenting with different styles and cultural influences, they believe they can better serve their creativity and their audience. They hope that listeners will appreciate the freedom they express in their music, not being confined to a single sound, genre, or concept.

The Influence of Southern Roots and New York Energy on witS & Smitty!'s Music

WitS hails from Arkansas, while Smitty! is from Virginia, but they met and developed their sound in New York. The combination of their southern roots and the energy of the Big Apple helped create a unique sound that incorporates 90's gospel, hip hop, rock, soul, blues, and early 2000's Virginia rap.

Facing the Biggest Challenge in the Music Industry: Funding and Learning from Mistakes

witS & Smitty! find the pay-to-play nature of the music industry to be their biggest challenge. With radio play placements costing up to six figures and low streaming wages, it's difficult for independent artists to make an impact without significant financial backing. One of the biggest mistakes witS & Smitty! made was spending money on fake playlists, which provided no real listener data and risked getting them into trouble. They have since learned more effective strategies for marketing their music.

Memorable Live Performances and Ambitions for the Next 5 Years

One of their most memorable performances was at Chelsea Music Hall in New York City, where they performed their album "Eat Your Food" live for the first time. The show was well-received, and witS & Smitty! felt a sense of connection with friends and associates in the audience. In the next five years, witS & Smitty! hope to become seven-figure earners, travel the world to perform, have a radio hit, and work on film projects both as songwriters and film scorers.

Meaningful Fan Connections: The Impact of Music Across Borders

witS & Smitty! find it incredibly meaningful when they receive messages from fans in other countries who they've never met. These interactions inspire them and reaffirm their love for creating art, as fans ask questions about their lyrics and production choices.

New Single "Greedy" Coming Out on May 12th

Their upcoming single, titled "Greedy," addresses capitalism and the things some people do for money at the expense of others. As inflation, gun violence, and financial setbacks continue to rise in the country, the song holds heavier weight. Drums and vocals were performed by WitS, guitar, bass, engineer, and mix were played by Smitty!. Nick Hetko played keys, and Simon Dufour was on the flute.
