Riya Gadher: Crafting Hopeful and Empowering Pop

Riya Gadher: Crafting Hopeful and Empowering Pop

Introduction

Originally from Leicester, I made the move to London to pursue my passion for music professionally. My journey into music took a significant turn in 2016 when I attended my first-ever concert, which happened to be Justin Bieber's 'Purpose' tour. The energy in the arena, the ecstatic fans, and his stagecraft left me in complete awe. It was then that I realized I wanted to be on that stage, making music my career.

Unique Style

My music can be described as pop with elements of alt/pop. One of the underlying themes in much of my work is hope and optimism. I'm deeply involved in every aspect of my music, as I sing, write, and self-produce all my material. I believe that female producers are underrepresented in the industry, and I'm determined to change that. When I create music, my goal is to make the listener feel something emotionally, whether it's joy or sadness. I want my music to always carry a certain depth.

Musical Influences

My influences are vast, thanks to my background in songwriting and performance. Some of the key artists who have shaped my musical journey include Hans Zimmer, Coldplay, London Grammar, Lana Del Rey, Massive Attack, and Aurora. The list is extensive, as I'm even indirectly influenced by rappers.

Songwriting Process

My songwriting typically begins at the piano. I'll improvise until I stumble upon something that catches my ear, and then I start developing that idea. Melodies naturally form to match the piano's progression. Lyrics emerge based on the emotions conveyed by the piano. I listen to what the music is trying to say and how it makes me feel. It's almost like the music writes itself, and I can't always explain how it happens.

'Own Way Home'

'Own Way Home' is a song about embarking on a journey of self-discovery in a fast-paced and chaotic world. It's about finding mental peace and having the courage to cut your path, staying true to yourself. The song touches on faith, hope, female empowerment, and courage. Writing and self-producing it were crucial elements as they reflect the song's theme of self-empowerment and taking control of your life.

Live Performances

Live performances are an exhilarating experience for me. Despite being somewhat shy offstage, I transform into a different persona when I perform, almost like an alter ego. Each song has its character, and I enjoy acting out these personas. It allows me to become anyone I want on stage.

Artistic Evolution

Moving to London has expanded my musical horizons. I've been exposed to various forms of music and art, which have greatly influenced my artistic identity. A significant part of my evolution as an artist has been my self-sufficiency in finding my identity and what I stand for. Future music from me will continue to be personal, reflecting my beliefs and values, with more musical expression and experimentation on the horizon.

Message to Aspiring Artists

My advice to aspiring artists is to keep honing your craft, be fearless in paving your path, and prepare for the journey ahead. It's a long road, but if you genuinely believe in your art and yourself, there's something remarkable waiting at the end of it.
