Locals Only: Riding the Waves of Music Together

Locals Only: Riding the Waves of Music Together

Locals Only is more than just a band; they are a tight-knit group of musical talents brought together by fate and a shared love for music. Comprising Madison Daniel (lead vocals + rhythm guitar), Dom Holman (drums), Eric Yang (vocals + lead guitar), and Dominic Hopewell (bass), this quartet has embarked on a musical journey that's as unique as their name.

Madi shares the story of how Locals Only came into being: "I actually messaged Dom (bass) on a music website back in April this year. Eric, (drummer) Dom, and I lived together at our University's accommodation, so I quickly found out about the instruments they played and asked them to join me to meet up with (bass) Dom. We all shared the same passion for music in general and the music we wanted to create. From there, things fell into place pretty quickly, and we had our first gig in July!"

Crafting the Sound: A Collaborative Songwriting Process

Locals Only's songwriting process is a harmonious blend of individual creativity and collective input. According to Eric, their songs usually begin with an idea from one of the band members, which then evolves as each member adds their unique touch. "Green" is a prime example of this collaborative approach, with Madi initiating the idea, and the band expanding upon it during a practice session. While they have their own ideas that emerge during jamming sessions, most of their songs stem from one person's initial concept.

Their songwriting revolves around themes and emotions that resonate with people. They aim to create music that listeners can relate to on a personal level. "Green" delves into the struggle of moving on from a past relationship when remnants of that person linger. "Bus Stop," an unreleased song, reflects on Eric's experiences during his first semester at university, encompassing themes of relationships, financial constraints, and new experiences. However, not all their songs tackle profound topics; "Luna" is a heartfelt tribute to a friend's dog.

The Thrill of Live Performances: Moments to Cherish

Live performances hold a special place in Locals Only's hearts. Dom (bass) recalls the overwhelming crowd response when they played "Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus for the first time. Madi fondly remembers their first gig, particularly performing "Kilby Girl" by The Backseat Lovers, a song they had practiced extensively and confidently. Eric and Dom (drummer) also highlight their first gig, where they played to a much larger crowd than expected. Dig The Gig was another memorable performance filled with fun and energy.

Overcoming Challenges: Defining Their Unique Path

Starting out, Locals Only faced the challenge of finding their musical direction in a landscape teeming with talent. The plethora of talented bands today can make it difficult to stand out. However, they emphasize the importance of not succumbing to pressure. They create music they genuinely enjoy and let their creativity flow without constant comparisons or worries about being different.

Embracing the Local Music Scene

Locals Only is fortunate to be part of a vibrant local music scene, thanks to their city's accessibility and a community of talented musicians. Their first gig at the Underground, alongside Patscave, was marked by exceptional support and camaraderie. The venue and the band were welcoming and accommodating, highlighting the genuine interest local musicians have in helping one another and their shared passion for music.

Looking to the Future: Energetic Music on the Horizon

Locals Only has exciting plans for the future. After a summer break, they aim to return in 2024 with more energetic music. Their goal is to release an EP next year, although nothing is set in stone. Fans can eagerly anticipate more Locals Only music on the horizon. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for what's to come!
