Fola MuziQ’s style is a seamless blend of his upbringing and personal experiences. His influences are as diverse as his sound. From global icons like The Weeknd to Nigerian trailblazers like D’Banj, Olamide, and Wande Coal, each artist has left a mark on his creative journey. The influence of legends like Fela Kuti and Wasiu Ayinde also shines through, especially in the way he prioritizes storytelling in his lyrics. “It’s an eclectic mix,” he admits, laughing. “But that’s what makes my sound unique.”
The Art of Creating: From Inspiration to Execution
When it comes to songwriting, Fola follows an organic process. Sometimes, an instrumental sparks an idea, leading him to craft lyrics that match its emotion. Other times, he builds from a melody that comes to him spontaneously, later shaping it into a complete track with a producer. “Love is always an easy source of inspiration,” he says. “It’s a core theme in Afrobeats, alongside partying and celebrating life. But beyond that, I love telling stories about ambition—about fighting for your dreams.”
Performing live has also been a defining part of his career. As an independent artist, he’s had to prove himself in front of skeptical crowds, but that challenge is what excites him. “By the end of my set, I usually win them over,” he says, enjoying the process of turning unfamiliar faces into fans. A recent private show, though chaotic and last-minute, stands out as one of his favorite performances.
Building a Legacy: The Vision for the Future
Beyond the music itself, Fola MuziQ pays close attention to the visual storytelling in his work. His music videos and album artwork often feature locations in his South London community—his barbershop, the local high street—elements that add a personal touch. “Locality and community are key themes for me,” he explains. “It grounds the music and makes it relatable.”
While he doesn’t chase collaborations for clout, he’s open to working with like-minded artists. Omah Lay and Seyi Vibez top his list, while producers like SARZ are dream collaborators. But his primary focus remains on carving his own path, building a dedicated fanbase, and evolving his artistry. “I have grand ambitions,” he admits. “I want to push the boundaries of African music—introducing more blockbuster-style storytelling, more cinematic experiences. The vision is clear.”
His advice to fans and aspiring musicians? “Trust yourself. Believe in your vision and keep going. Fear will always be there—fear of failure, fear of judgment, fear of the unknown. But you have to fight it. When you do, you win the greatest prize: the right to be your best self.”
