Flwr Grl: Crafting Locket Rock with a Unique Perspective

Flwr Grl: Crafting Locket Rock with a Unique Perspective

Introduction:

Meet Kiki, the 26-year-old talent from St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, known as Flwr Grl. Her journey as a music artist began with a passion for singing that emerged at a young age. Her very first performance took place in a grade 1 talent show, singing Hilary Duff's "Why Not." However, it was picking up her older brother's neglected acoustic guitar at age twelve that truly ignited her musical journey. Kiki taught herself to play by watching YouTube videos and soon started writing her own songs. From open mics to high school "coffee house" acoustic nights, she honed her craft. Her first real show came at the age of 19 in her hometown, thanks to a local promoter who later became a close friend. Thus, the musical adventure of Flwr Grl began.

“The name Flwr Grl is funny because it really doesn't mean much. I always wanted to be a flower girl in a wedding when I was younger and never got the chance. I got too old and decided to make myself a flower girl! ”

Musical Style:

Flwr Grl has coined a unique sub-genre called "Locket Rock." Positioned in the intriguing space between indie rock and indie pop, Locket Rock defies easy genre categorization. Kiki's music often explores themes and emotions rooted in the ups and downs of her life. Her songs are her emotional refuge, helping her make sense of her scattered feelings and experiences. Her lyrical inspiration derives from everyday occurrences, often finding beauty in the mundane moments of life.

Inspirations:

Her musical influences encompass a diverse range of artists, including Said the Whale, Feist, Jack Johnson, the Beach Boys, Beach Bunny, Alvvays, Soccer Mommy, and Tennis. These musicians have significantly contributed to shaping her creative vision.

Songwriting Process:

Kiki's songwriting process is fluid, starting with lyrics or a catchy hook that often strikes her at the most unexpected moments. She ensures these bursts of inspiration are captured in her phone's notes or voice recorder. The people around her are a rich source of inspiration. She actively listens during conversations, picking up lines and phrases that might evolve into lyrics.

Visual Artistry:

Working closely with her friend, Morgan Joll, a talented photographer, has been a blessing for Flwr Grl's visual elements. Morgan has captured much of Kiki's online content, as well as creating artwork for her singles and upcoming EP. Their collaboration is marked by creativity and a willingness to embrace unique and sometimes unconventional ideas.

Artistic Growth:

Kiki's artistic journey has been marked by personal growth and a growing sense of self. Her twenties have brought her greater comfort with honesty in her songwriting, as she shed the fear of judgment. She aspires to continue making music that resonates with her and is enjoyable to sing and perform.

Message to Fans:

She encourages aspiring musicians to heed their inner calling and follow their instincts, even in the face of doubt. Kiki believes that if something is calling you, it's your duty to answer and follow your gut.
