Introduction
Hello, this is Flava Hype! I was born and raised in San Francisco, CA, but now I call Montgomery, AL, my home. My musical journey began on the West Coast, but it truly took off when I moved down South. Initially, I started with writing poetry, but my passion for music led me to rap. I began by rewriting lyrics to popular songs, adding my twist to them. Looking back, it was like I was making mixtapes before I even knew what they were, hahaha!
Unique Style
My unique style developed when a producer asked me, "What is YOUR style? What will set you apart?" I made a promise to myself not to be a cheaper version of another artist. I started to create perspectives and stories that I hadn't heard from anyone else. I wanted to be authentic and original.
Musical Influences
One of my biggest musical influences may come as a surprise: Boyz II Men! Their attention to artistic detail and consistency left a profound impact on me. In the hip-hop and rap realm, my influences include Rakim, Digital Underground, BONE, and Eminem.
Songwriting Process
My songwriting process can be quite diverse. I begin with an idea, drawn from anywhere and everywhere. Then, I search for a beat that evokes the right mood and tempo for my lyrics. Surprisingly, I don't always start with lyrics; sometimes, I begin with a cadence to establish a rhyme pattern, and the words flow naturally afterward. Inspiration can strike from the most unexpected places. I might think up a random bar that initially has no context but eventually finds its way into one of my songs.
Career Highlights
I've had some memorable career highlights, such as winning awards in songwriting contests and receiving an honorable mention for Song of the Year. However, one of the most significant moments for me was when my oldest son knew the words to one of my songs. That really touched my heart.
Artistic Growth
Artistic growth is vital for all artists. It allows us to reach a broader audience and convey our messages to more people. By staying true to myself and evolving naturally, I see my music reaching a wider and more diverse audience.
Live Performances
Live performances are an incredible benefit for artists. The excitement from the fans is electrifying. The energy and feedback during the performance are unmatched. Plus, the visual experience leaves a lasting impression on the audience. It's a unique way to connect with fans and create a bond that lasts a lifetime.
Message to Aspiring Artists
To aspiring artists or my fans, I'd like to share these words: Don't be afraid to be different if you don't feel like you fit the mold. Being yourself is the most valuable thing you can offer as an artist. Don't give up just because you haven't achieved your goals yet; keep going because your breakthrough is just around the corner!
