Sophia Blenda is the stage name of Sophie Löw, the 26-year-old singer-songwriter who is best known as the singer of the Viennese band Culk. With her remarkable lyrics and distinctive voice, she has made a name for herself in the indie rock scene. Culk has released two albums in recent years, which can be seen as a declaration of war against more deeply rooted patriarchal structures and which illuminate the relationship between the individual and society in a multi-layered way.
Now Löw is stepping into the public eye as Sophia Blenda with her solo debut album "Die Neue Heiterkeit". The album deals with themes such as fear, self-determination, violence and sisterhood. At the musical centre of the chamber pop design is the piano, which sometimes carries sombrely, sometimes glamorously melodiously through the songs and reveals Sophia Blenda's narrative.
Her music is characterised by an inner intake of breath, a moment in which she looks at everything from above. Sophia Blenda is the representative of a generation whose women feel at once brave and resigned, dismissed and seen. Their fears become louder and louder, but remain unheard. Nevertheless, the longing to overcome these fears remains greater to the end: "Open remains who reaches into the future," she sings in the album's title track.
