America Gutierrez refuses to be boxed in by a single genre. Her music evolves as she does, flowing with her emotions and inspirations. Right now, she leans into a smooth R&B- meets-chill sound, but she’s bringing her Latin roots into the mix, incorporating Spanish lyrics and rhythmic influences.
“I don’t like to tie myself down to anything, and that definitely translates into my music,” she explains. She thrives on experimenting with new sounds and pushing herself into creative spaces she hasn’t explored before.
Her inspirations reflect that same dynamic energy. From Rosalía’s boundary-pushing artistry to Billie Eilish’s raw storytelling, she pulls from a wide range of influences, blending them into something uniquely her own. But more than anything, she’s driven by the simple act of watching others do what they love. “That’s what makes me want to do the same.”
The Chaos of Songwriting
If there’s one part of the creative process that America Gutierrez finds hard to define, it’s songwriting. “This might be the question I dread the most,” she admits with a laugh. “My process is a frighteningmess.com.”
Some songs come together in 15 minutes, while others take an entire year. She writes mostly at night, when emotions feel more intense and unfiltered, but her biggest struggle is keeping her attention locked in long enough to finish a song.
“Songwriting for me involves a lot of heavy emotions, and I think people forget that it’s like literally letting you see inside my head,” she says. “It’s scary.” But it’s also what makes her music deeply personal and relatable.
A Self-Taught Creative Carving Her Own Path
Though she has only released one song so far, that first track wasn’t just about putting music out—it was about proving to herself that she could do it. Learning every aspect of the process, from recording to distribution, was an accomplishment in itself. “I love challenging myself with things I’ve never done before,” she says. “Seeing the end product is more of a high than anything.”
Beyond the music, America has a strong visual sense, something she developed while working as a music video model. Watching directors and creatives at work, she started taking notes—literally. She would jot things down in her phone to research later, eventually applying that knowledge to her own visuals.
Now, she takes full control of her album artwork and creative direction, snapping pictures in the studio and experimenting with edits until something clicks. “I come up with a few different ideas before finally settling on something completely unrelated,” she laughs. “That’s just how I work best.”
While collaborations haven’t been her focus yet, they’re coming. Artists are starting to reach out, and she’s excited to step into that next phase of her career.
